● 빈라덴을 고무(Inspiration, 鼓舞)시킨 사람 - 아라파트

야세르 아라파트(Yasser Arafat)는, 그의 주민들의 독립국가를 향한 희망을 꺾었고, 그들의 고통의 완화를 위해 계획된 수십억 달러를 도둑질했고, 그들의 아이들에게 매우 많은 증오를 심어주어 그들이 기꺼이 그들 자신을 인간폭탄으로 변화시키게 만든 국제 테러리즘(Terrorism)의 대부(Godfather)였다.



그는 3가지 비도덕적인 무기들을 사용함으로써, 티벳(Tibet)의 자유, 쿠르드(Kurd)의 독립, 그리고 바스크(Basque) 독립국가처럼 대등하거나 더욱 가치있는 주장들 보다 팔레스타인(Palestine)의 주장을 어떻게든 앞서게 해냈다. 그 무기들이란, (1) 이전에 세계에 알려지지 않은 규모의 국제 테러리즘, (2) 에너지(Energy) 협박에 의해 그의 주장을 지지하도록 기꺼이 강요할 산유국들과의 동맹, (3) 유태국가[이스라엘(Israel)]에 대항하는 국제 反유태주의의 활용.



아라파트는 수천명의 죄없는 이스라엘 사람들, 수백명의 죄없는 미국 사람들, 그리고 수많은 사람들의 살해에 개인적으로 책임이 있다. 그에 앞서 민족적으로 동기부여된 다른 학살자들처럼, 그는 여러차례 이스라엘의 학교들과 유치원들에 잘 계획된 공격을 함으로써, 유태 어린이들을 죽이는 것을 매우 즐거워했다. 그는 또한 개인적으로, 그에게 반대하거나 이스라엘에 협력한 수백명의 그의 주민들을 살해하도록 명령했다. 의견차이를 허용할 사람이 켤코 아닌 그는 그의 비평가들에게 응답하기 위해 논쟁 보다 총알을 사용했다.



아라파트는, 그가 오랫동안 아주 많은 사람들에 의해 그랬듯이, 그가 그의 열렬한 학생에게 테러리즘이 효과가 있고 테러리스트(Terrorist)들이 비겁한 세계에 의해 칭찬받을 수 있고 보상받을 수 있음을 증명했기 때문에, 오사마 빈라덴(Osama bin Laden)을 고무(Inspiration, 鼓舞)시킨 사람이었다.



아라파트는, 넬슨 마델라(Nelson Mandela)流처럼, 테러리스트로부터 조정자(Peacemaker)로 변화할 수 있었던 그런 지도자들 가운데 하나는 아니었다. 그는 대답으로서 『예』라고 말하는 법을 결코 배우지 않아, 그는 기회를 잃어버리기 위한 기회를 잃지 않았다.



윌리엄 클린턴(William J. Clinton) 前 대통령과 그의 수석 자문관(Adviser) 데니스 로스(Dennis Ross)에 의하면, 아라파트는 2000-2001年에 팔레스타인 사람들을 위한 독립국가를 만들기 위한 캠프데이비드(Camp David)와 타바(Taba)에서의 실패에 개인적으로 책임이 있었다. 지금 그들의 3번째 독립국가의 기념일을 축하하는 대신에, 팔레스타인 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들에게도 죽음과 고통을 주면서, 수천명의 사상자들과 數年 동안의 스스로 초래(招來)한 괴로움으로 고통받아 오고 있다.



아직은 팔레스타인 사람들 뿐만 아니라 많은 유럽(Europe) 사람들에 의해서도 그의 평화로운 죽음에 눈물이 흘려지고 있지만, 아라파트의 유산은 유혈(Bloodshed, 流血)과 전쟁 가운데 하나이다. 아라파트가 독립국가의 제안을 받아들였다면, 그의 몸은 라말라(Ramallah)의 돌부스러기 속 대신에, 팔레스타인 국가의 수도였을 예루샬라임(Yerushalayim 영문표기는 Jerusalem)의 한쪽에 묻힐 수 있었을 것이다.



세계는 아라파트를 범죄자로서 취급하지 않음으로써 끔찍한 실수를 저질렀다.



그는, 그의 「용기」에 대해 칭찬받는 대신에, 미국의 외교관들, 이스라엘의 운동선수들, 그리고, 해외여행객들의 살해를 명령한 것에 대해 기소(起訴)되었어야 한다. 힘없는 사람들을 죽이는 일에는 용기가 없어도 되지만, 평화를 추구하는 일에는 자신의 생명을 걸어야 할 만큼 아주 많은 용기가 필요하다. 아라파트가 부족했던 것은 바로 그 용기였다.



노벨평화상은 평화를 싫어하는 이 사람에게 授與됨으로써 싸구려로 되었다. 바티칸(Vatican)은 교회의 모든 가르침을 어긴 사람을 자주 환영함으로써 더럽혀졌다. UN은 이 겁쟁이를 치켜세움으로써 평범해졌다. 그리고, 테러리즘은 아라파트가 그의 살해행위로 받은 보상들에 의해 북돋워졌다.



결국, 아라파트는, 그의 인지(認知)된 敵이 유태국가였기 때문에, 운좋은 사람이었다. 그의 敵이 기독교도나 이슬람교도나 공산국가였다면, 그는 그의 대량살해를 위한 통행증을 결코 받지 못했을 것이다. 그는 세계의 끈질긴 反유태주의를 누구보다 잘 알아차렸고, 그는 전력(全力)을 다해 그것을 활용했다. 히틀러(Adolf Hitler)를 지지했거나 환영했고 기꺼이 그들의 끈질긴 편협(偏狹)함이 활용되도록 허용한 유럽 사람들의 손자들이 그의 惡에 공범자였다.



팔레스타인 사람들은, 마침내 그들의 실패한 지도자 야세르 아라파트의 유산을 거부할 때, 그들의 국가를 갖게 될 것이다. 팔레스타인 독립국가가 선언될 때, 아라파트는 사후(死後)에 많은 칭찬을 받을 것이다. 그는 그것을 받을 만하지 않을 것이다. 더많이 앞을 내다보는 지도자였다면, 히틀러의 실패한 후계자이고 빈라덴의 성공한 선배인 야세르 아라파트 보다는, 그 자신의 돈지갑을 위해서는 더적게 그의 국민을 위해서는 더많이 일했을 것이다.

Bin Laden's inspiration

Yasser Arafat was the godfather of international terrorism

who dashed his people's hope for statehood, stole billions

of dollars intended for the relief of their suffering, and

indoctrinated their children with so much hatred that they

willingly turned themselves into human bombs.



He did manage to leapfrog the Palestinian cause over equally

or more deserving causes - such as Tibetan freedom, Kurdish

independence, and Basque statehood - by wielding three

immoral weapons: first, international terrorism on a scale

previously unknown to the world; second, an alliance with

oil-rich states willing to extort support for his cause by

energy blackmail; and third, exploitation of international

anti-Semitism against the Jewish state.



Arafat was personally responsible for the murders of

thousands of innocent Israelis, hundreds of innocent

Americans, and countless others. Like other ethnically

motivated butchers before him, he delighted in killing

Jewish children, as he did in several well-planned attacks

on Israeli schools and nurseries. He also personally ordered

the murder of hundreds of his own people who disagreed with

him or collaborated with Israel. Never a man to tolerate

dissent, he employed bullets rather than arguments to

respond to his critics.



Arafat was the inspiration for Osama bin Laden, because he

proved to his eager student that terrorism works and that

terrorists can be praised and rewarded by a craven world, as

Arafat was by so many for so long.



Arafat was not one of those leaders who could, a la Nelson

Mandela, make the transition from terrorist to peacemaker.

He never learned how to take "yes" for an answer and he

never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.



According to former president Bill Clinton and his chief

adviser, Dennis Ross, Arafat was personally responsible for

the failure of Camp David and Taba to produce statehood for

the Palestinians in 2000-2001. Instead of now celebrating

their third anniversary of statehood, the Palestinians have

suffered thousands of casualties and years of self-inflicted

pain, while inflicting death and suffering on the Israelis

as well.



Arafat's legacy is one of bloodshed and war, yet tears are

being shed over his peaceful passing, not only by

Palestinians but by many Europeans as well. Had Arafat

accepted the offer of statehood, his body could have been

buried in the part of Jerusalem that would have been the

capital of the Palestinian state instead of in the rubble of

Ramallah.



The world made a terrible mistake by not treating Arafat as

a criminal.



He should have been indicted for ordering the murder of

American diplomats, Israeli athletes, and international

travelers instead of being praised for his "courage." It

takes no courage to kill the helpless and much courage to

risk one's own life in pursuit of peace. It was such courage

that Arafat lacked.



The Nobel Peace Prize was cheapened by being awarded to this

hater of peace. The Vatican was tarnished by its frequent

welcoming of a man who violated every teaching of the

Church. The United Nations was trivialized by its

lionization of this coward. And terrorism was encouraged by

the rewards Arafat received for his murders.



In the end, Arafat was a lucky man, lucky because his

perceived enemy was the Jewish state. Had his enemy been a

Christian or Muslim or communist state, he would never have

received a pass for his mass murder. He understood the

world's lingering anti-Semitism better than most, and he

exploited it for all it was worth. Those grandchildren of

Europeans who supported or welcomed Hitler and who willingly

allowed their lingering bigotry to be exploited were

complicit in his evil.



Eventually, the Palestinians will have their state, when

they finally reject the legacy of their failed leader Yasser

Arafat. When Palestinian statehood is declared, Arafat will

posthumously receive much of the credit. He will not deserve

it. A more farsighted leader would have done more for his

people, less for his own pocketbook, and better for the

world than did Hitler's failed successor and bin Laden's

successful predecessor - Yasser Arafat.
