USS Lincoln, USS Shoup Departing Everett

POSTED: 2:07 pm PDT October 13, 2004

EVERETT, Wash. -- The guided-missile destroyer Shoup departs

Everett Thursday as part of the battle group for the

aircraft carrier Lincoln.

Another guided-missile destroyer, the Momsen, arrives

Thursday in Everett. It's the new home port for the newly

commissioned ship.

On Friday, the Lincoln itself departs for deployment in the

western Pacific.

The Lincoln is the carrier where President Bush declared

major war operations in Iraq over. He landed on the carrier

to welcome it back to the United States in May 2003 under

a "Mission Accomplished" banner.

After its 290-day deployment, the Lincoln underwent a $280

million renovation at the naval shipyard in Bremerton.

When it leaves Puget Sound, the Lincoln will head for San

Diego to pick up its air wing. Fully loaded, the Lincoln has

a crew of 5,800.

USS Houston moving to Guam

Pacific edition, Monday, October 4, 2004

A third nuclear-powered submarine is set to make Guam home

in December, Guam Naval Base officials confirmed Friday.

Lt. Arwen Consaul, Guam Naval Base spokeswoman, said the USS

Houston will arrive in mid-December. The Houston currently

ports in Bremerton, Wash.

"Strategically, Guam's Central Pacific location offers

significant savings in both time and distance for

submarines," Consaul said.

"Pacific Fleet submarine assets can be on station much

quicker once stationed in Guam."

Already home-ported on the island are the USS San Francisco

and USS City of Corpus Christi. Both, like the Houston, are

Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarines, designed to seek

and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships.

Adm. Arthur J. Johnson, Guam Naval Base commander, told

Stars and Stripes in June that the Houston was expected to

join Guam’s Submarine Squadron 15 in December, bringing the

number of submarine-force sailors on Guam to 1,550.

Each submarine brings about 150 sailors, with 200 to 300 family

members, Consaul said.

Johnson also said that the Navy is studying whether to home-

port up to three more submarines on Guam.

Consaul said Friday that the Navy recently finished the

study and forwarded it to the chief of naval operations. No

decision has been made, she said.

Consaul added that Guam still is a candidate, along with

Hawaii, to receive a carrier battle group.

"The Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy are continuing

the analysis of the factors for which island will be better-

suited for home-basing a carrier," she said.

Submarine Squadron 15 was reactivated as an attack submarine

squadron on Guam in February 2001.

AWARE Teaches Sailors the Dangers of Alcohol

Story Number: NNS041012-05

Release Date: 10/12/2004 11:45:00 AM

By Journalist 2nd Class (SW) Chris Fowler, USS John C.

Stennis Public Affairs

ABOARD USS JOHN C. STENNIS (NNS) -- The Aware program aboard

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) has taught more than 550

Sailors how to recognize and reject the dangers of alcohol

abuse.

Aware is a program designed to give Sailors information to

make informed decisions about responsible drinking and the

associated hazards of alcohol abuse. According to

Personnelman 1st Class (SW) Eric Farmer, Stennis' Aware

program coordinator, his goal is that Sailors attending

Aware leave with a better understanding of alcoholism and

responsible drinking.

"Alcohol contributes to 100,000 deaths annually," Farmer

said. "That makes it the second leading cause of preventable

death in the United States after tobacco use."

The program is taught by an all-volunteer group of

facilitators. According to Aware facilitator, Legalman 2nd

Class Kevin Marshall, at the end of a session, the main

point the program tries to get across is that if you are

going to drink, do so in moderation and take responsibility

for your actions.

"Because of my job in the Legal Department, I've seen too

many people lose their careers because of alcohol-related

incidents," Marshall said. "One thing many Sailors don't

realize when they are out on liberty [under the buddy

system], is that if your buddy gets out of control, you both

could be held accountable."

Airman Tera Boe helps schedule aircraft maintenance for V-2

division's aircraft launch and recovery equipment office.

She attended Aware in order to meet the criteria needed to

qualify for overnight liberty privileges while on deployment.

"I went to Aware thinking that the class was going to be

very boring and dry," she said. "But it wasn't like that.

The class is taught with a very interactive approach. It

isn't like attending a lecture. It is more like having a

group discussion. I was really impressed, and I came out

with a much better understanding of the Navy's alcohol

policies."

Stennis is scheduled to return home to San Diego in early

November 2004 after a routine summer deployment to the

Western Pacific. The ship departed May 25 and visited

Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Japan, Malaysia and Western

Australia. In January 2005, Stennis is scheduled to change

homeport to Naval Base Kitsap, Bremerton, Wash.
