Keep U.S. Marines in Japan, Marine Commander Says

Thu Jul 8, 2004 01:38 PM ET

By Charles Aldinger

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Marine commander in the

Pacific indicated Thursday he opposed any withdrawal of

Marines from Japan, suggesting that some of the 17,000

troops on Okinawa should be transferred to bases on Japan's

mainland.

"I think moving away from Japan moves us away from where the

need is and where most of the problems are likely to occur"

in Asia, Lt. Gen. Wallace Gregson said when asked if U.S.

Marines might be shifted from Okinawa to Guam.

Gregson spoke to reporters as Washington and Tokyo continued

talks on the status of U.S. forces and whether they will be

cut in a global realignment of the American military. He

said he did not know if any final decision had been made.

"Where would we would move? (I) don't know," Gregson

added. "There have been an awful lot of things talked about

and they will continue to be talked about."

A centerpiece of the talks is whether the Pentagon will

remove any Marines off the Japanese island of Okinawa -

where the number has been temporarily reduced to 14,000 by

deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan - and shift them to the

United States or to the U.S. island of Guam in the Western

Pacific.

The United States already has said it will remove 12,500 of

its 37,000 troops in South Korea by the end of next year.

Washington also is expected to withdraw thousands of troops

from Germany although no such decision has been announced.

Gregson, who is commander of the 70,000 U.S. Marines based

in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes California, said

he was not directly involved in the Japan negotiations.

But pressed on where any Marines might be moved if their

controversial presence on Okinawa is reduced, he suggested

that joint operations could be increased at Japanese bases

on the country's main island of Honshu.

"The purpose of the move would be to enhance our ability to

train with the (Japan) Self Defense Forces. Moving on to one

of their bases somewhere - or a number of them - might make

sense. It's an option that I think is yet unexplored but

that would be the one that I would favor," Gregson said.
