Four Killed After Russian Bomber Crashes
MOSCOW (AP) - A Russian air force bomber on a routine
training flight crashed in northwestern Russia, killing all
four crew members, the Defense Ministry said Friday.
The TU-22M3 long-range bomber was approaching the Saltsy air
field in the Novgorod region, south of St. Petersburg, at
around 11:40 p.m. Thursday when flight controllers lost
contact with it, the ministry's press service said.
Emergency workers found the wreckage about six miles from
the airfield and recovered the bodies just after midnight.
Officials found flight data recorders Friday morning and
defense officials ordered all such bombers grounded pending
an investigation.
The bomber, which was carrying no weapons, was on a training
flight and was about four miles from the air field when it
turned, then nose-dived into the ground, said long-range
aviation commander Lt. Gen. Igor Khvorov, according the
Interfax news agency.
"Something went wrong. It tilted to the left side, increased
its vertical speed and crashed," he was quoted as saying.
The crew had been ordered to bail out of the aircraft but
did not, he said.
"They struggled to save the airplane until the last moment,"
Khvorov said. "We presume they were no longer able to use
their ejection seats because the situation was critical."
In September, a TU-160 strategic bomber crashed while
performing a test flight southeast of Moscow, killing all
four crew members. Defense officials blamed technical
malfunctions.
