Carl Vinson Strike Group visits Hong Kong

From Carl Vinson Strike Group Public Affairs

HONG KONG - The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group made a call
to the Far East port of Hong Kong Aug. 6, seizing the
opportunity for some long-anticipated rest and recreation in
this "Gateway to China."

Accompanying the supercarrier Carl Vinson (CVN 70),
homeported in Bremerton, Wash., are the strike group's
guided missile cruiser, USS Antietam (CG 54), and guided
missile destroyer, USS Lassen (DDG 82), both homeported in
San Diego; frigate USS Ingraham (FFG 61), homeported in
Everett, Wash.; and fast combat support ship USS Sacramento
(AOE 1), homeported in Bremerton.

The port visit gives the ships' more than 6,400 Sailors and
Marines a chance to experience the culture and hospitality
of Hong Kong, sightsee, and participate in community-service
projects for their hosts.

The Carl Vinson Strike Group was ordered to the western
Pacific on Feb. 7 in an effort to maintain America's
standing commitment to peace, stability and theater security
cooperation in coordination with allies and friends in the
region.

The arrival in Hong Kong marked the aircraft carrier's first
visit to the port since November 1998.

USS Carl Vinson and its crew departed Bremerton on Jan. 13.
The Navy's third Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the ship was
commissioned March 13, 1982, displaces more than 95,000
tons, and carries approximately 75 combat and support
aircraft.

From its 4.5-acre flight deck, the carrier can
quickly launch and recover the world's most modern military
aircraft to operate with other elements of the U.S. Armed
Forces as well as those of allied nations.
