Singer PSY has been referred to the prosecution on charges of receiving psychotropic drugs through remote prescriptions and having his manager pick them up on his behalf.
According to legal circles on June 2, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office is currently investigating a total of six individuals, including PSY, three medical staff members from a university hospital in Seoul, and two company employees, who were all referred on charges of violating the Medical Service Act.
The police referred PSY to the prosecution without detention on May 29, believing that he had received non-face-to-face prescriptions for Xanax and Stilnox—psychotropic drugs used to treat depression and sleep disorders—from 2022 until last year, and had his manager pick them up.
It is reported that the police determined the doctor at the hospital issued the non-face-to-face prescriptions based on a personal friendship with PSY. Three medical staff members, including the doctor in question, were also handed over to the prosecution on the same charges.
However, police also investigated whether the medication had been prescribed through a proxy, but reportedly found evidence only that the drugs had been picked up by someone else on PSY's behalf.
Earlier, P NATION apologized over the controversy, saying, "Having someone else collect prescription sleeping medication on his behalf was a clear mistake and oversight."
The agency, however, stressed that PSY had received a proper medical diagnosis and prescription and denied any allegations that the medication had been prescribed through a proxy.
