Premiering on Monday, May 11, the Tving original "The Legend of Kitchen Soldier" (written by Choi Ryong, directed by Jo Nam-hyung) is a military cooking fantasy drama that follows Private Kang Sung-jae (played by Park Ji-hoon), who swaps his rifle for a kitchen knife and his ammunition belt for an apron as he evolves into a "legendary cook." The series has drawn extra attention as Park Ji-hoon, known to be a "military enthusiast," takes on the lead role.
Regarding his decision to join "The Legend of Kitchen Soldier", Park Ji-hoon stated, "I really wanted to try wearing a military uniform while working on a project, and I also wanted to take on a new challenge." He further expressed his deep affection for the character, saying, "I found it interesting that Kang Sung-jae is a character who establishes his own standing while adapting to an unfamiliar environment. The process of him building trust within the unit and making friends through his amazing skills was also very appealing."
To portray the character of Kang Sung-jae, who is set to become a "legendary cook," Park Ji-hoon put in exceptional effort. "To convincingly portray the unique profession of a military cook, I took cooking lessons before filming began. As I learned to cook one dish at a time, my knife skills gradually improved," he said, sparking curiosity about the impressive culinary skills he will showcase in the series.
Regarding the premise where Kang Sung-jae levels up his cooking skills by completing quests, he explained, "I wanted to express a character who gradually grows by utilizing the 'Guardian,' a quest-giver that appears virtually in the story. I paid special attention to my facial expressions, such as shifting my gaze as if the character were actually standing right in front of me."
Park Ji-hoon chose "Kkang-Sung-jae" as the nickname he hopes to gain through "The Legend of Kitchen Soldier". He added a cute reason for his choice: "Kkang-Sung-jae is the nickname for the character Kang Sung-jae in the show. I felt good whenever I was called that, and the sound of it feels very cute, so I want to be called Kkang-Sung-jae."
Finally, regarding the key points to watch, he said, "I hope viewers will watch how 'Kkang-Sung-jae' builds relationships with various characters and grows, and what kind of chemistry he creates in the process. I also hope you take an interest in the character's transformation as he grows by utilizing the interesting concept of the Guardian."
