Actor Jang Dong-yoon is stepping behind the camera as “Director Jang Dong-yoon.” His first feature film, "The Yeast", is set to open on April 15, alongside the release of a teaser poster.
Opening exclusively at Megabox, "The Yeast" marks Jang’s feature-length directorial debut. The film follows Daseul, an 18-year-old girl who’s the daughter of a small-town brewery and a devoted makgeolli lover. One day, she realizes the taste of the makgeolli has changed. She sets out to find the missing "The Yeast"―the key fermentation starter for makgeolli―sparking a one-of-a-kind adventure.
Following his 2023 short directorial debut, "Please Be My Ears," expectations are high for Jang’s storytelling and direction. Centering on "The Yeast"―an authentically Korean ingredient rarely spotlighted in films―"The Yeast" adds a fresh twist. The cast includes Kim Seung-yun, Song Ji-hyeok, and Park Myung-hoon.
The newly unveiled teaser poster features the line, “Can I find my world again?” alongside Daseul (Kim Seung-yun) clutching a bottle of makgeolli, heightening curiosity. The never-before-seen pairing of a high school girl and makgeolli is instantly attention-grabbing and piques interest from future moviegoers.
"The Yeast" has already been invited to major domestic festivals, including the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, and the Ulju Mountain Film Festival, earning positive reactions. Now, attention turns to how paying audiences will respond.
The film opens exclusively at Megabox on April 15.
