Director Yoon Je-kyun, known for box office hits like ‘Ode to My Father’ and ‘Haeundae,’ is heading to Hollywood with a taekwondo-led action film titled ‘Belladonna.’
On the 17th (local time), U.S. outlet Variety reported that Yoon will direct the taekwondo action movie ‘Belladonna.’ The lead role goes to Taemi, an actor and former taekwondo athlete.
‘Belladonna’ follows a former contract killer who starts over in Seoul. When someone from her past reappears, she’s pulled back into the world she thought she left behind.
Yoon will both produce and direct the film. Co-producers include Ahn Chang-bum, head of the K-Tigers taekwondo demonstration team, and veteran producer Mike Leeder of Red Packet Media, known for projects including ‘Rush Hour 3.’
The film will be produced in English, with a soundtrack built around K-pop. Music producers who worked on the OST for ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ and on songs by BLACKPINK and BTS are expected to join.
Taemi is a member of K-Tigers and a former national taekwondo team athlete with a world championship title. She has acted in films such as ‘The Kick,’ ‘Female War: Bloody War in Bongcheon-dong,’ and ‘It’s Okay to Be a Middle Schooler.’ She also recently drew attention as the stunt coordinator for ‘KPop Demon Hunters.’
“It’s time to fuse Korean martial arts with cinema in a new way,” Yoon said, adding that “the global success of K-pop has opened the door for us to introduce ‘K-Kick’ cinema to the world.”
‘Belladonna’ is aiming to begin filming this summer.
