Choi Hee-seo and Son Suk-ku’s U.S. feature "Bedford Park" scored big at the 42nd Sundance Film Festival, taking home the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Debut Feature from the festival’s top competition lineup.

The film made a splash right out of its world premiere, earning a standing ovation. By its third screening on Jan. 28 (local time), "Bedford Park" sold out the 1,200-seat Eccles Theater, cementing buzz on the ground. Of the 90 indie titles at Sundance this year, only a handful have secured distribution so far―making "Bedford Park"s momentum stand out even more.

Sundance, North America’s largest showcase for independent film, is known for spotlighting bold storytelling and fresh voices. The U.S. Dramatic Competition, in particular, has long been a launchpad for distinctive new filmmakers and a bellwether for American indie cinema.

Directed by Stephanie Ahn and led by Choi and Son, "Bedford Park" follows Audrey (Choi), a Korean American woman struggling with identity and isolation under immigrant parents, and Eli (Son), a former wrestler adopted as a child. After Audrey’s mother is in a car accident, she crosses paths with Eli; as they grow closer, the two begin to heal old wounds and forge a profound bond. The film’s intimate, universal approach to love―rather than a narrow focus on immigrant experience―proved key to its awards-season heat.

U.S. press has rallied behind the film since its Sundance bow. The Hollywood Reporter praised its “nuanced performances that sketch an unvarnished bond between two lonely souls,” while ESPN Radio Utah called it “one of the finest performances we saw at Sundance this year.” The Wrap noted that “Son Suk-ku nails the essence of a man marked by solitude and hurt,” and Next Best Picture lauded “a performance that finds depth beneath the surface.”

Manohla Dargis also weighed in, highlighting how the two characters “tentatively emerge from their isolation over time and face life with a persuasive emotional realism.”

The project was produced in part by Son’s company, Stannum. On the heels of its Sundance win, the filmmakers confirmed a worldwide distribution deal with Sony Pictures Classics.

A representative from Stannum, which achieved this milestone just two years after its founding, added: “With Sony Pictures Classics onboard and global release plans moving ahead, we’re especially eager to bring "Bedford Park" to Korean audiences and connect in a meaningful way.”
