Premiering Oct. 3 ahead of the Chuseok holiday, the fantasy rom-com follows Genie (Kim Woo-bin), a lamp-dwelling spirit who wakes after a millennium-long hiatus, and Ga-young (Suzy), an emotionless human who couldn’t care less about free wishes. Their dangerous game over three wishes spins into a high-concept love story with plenty of bite. The reunion of rom-com power duo Kim Woo-bin and Suzy is joined by a colorful ensemble, including Ahn Eun-jin, Noh Sang-hyun, Go Kyu-pil and Lee Joo-young, each teasing scene-stealing turns.
Dropped Sept. 18, the trailer teases an unpredictable push-and-pull between a devilish genie and a seemingly unfeeling heroine. Genie, who has spent centuries corrupting humans one wish at a time, finally meets his match in Ga-young ― a woman immune to temptation and unmoved by his nonstop sweet talk.
Then comes the twist: the wish-averse Ga-young challenges Genie to a life-or-death, best-of-five wager. She disputes his credo ― that every human eventually gives in to temptation ― and vows that if he proves her wrong, she’ll cash in all three wishes and even let him be the one to end her life.
From there, the pair’s relationship veers from brutal honesty and shove-first banter to a breath-stealing kiss. The trailer cuts between their barbed exchanges and a swoony, time-and-space-bending waltz, dialing up both the sparks and the stakes.
Complicating matters, a grim reaper named Soo-hyun (played by Noh Sang-hyun) ― who hopes Ga-young’s wishes are righteous ― crosses paths with Genie for the first time in nearly a thousand years, ratcheting up the tension. We glimpse Ga-young finally in tears and Genie consumed by fury, while others who get their hands on the lamp hint at a wider web of wishes that could entangle everyone involved.
“'Genie, Make a Wish' features a genie who grants three wishes and a host of characters seduced by his sweet temptations,” writer Kim Eun-sook said. “Follow their wildly different wishes, and you’ll arrive at a finale that lingers ― a whirlwind of emotion that stays with you.”
