Director Yeon Sang-ho’s “The Ugly” has reclaimed the top spot at the Korean box office.
According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), “The Ugly” drew 39,495 admissions on Sept. 15, bringing its cumulative total to 356,734.
The film opened at No. 1 on Sept. 11 but ceded the crown on day two to “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle.” It lingered at No. 2 before bouncing back to the summit on Monday of its second week, as “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle” entered its fifth week and cooled.
Weekday admissions remain under 50,000, but the slow-and-steady momentum suggests the film could hold through Korea’s Chuseok holiday frame.
“The Ugly” follows Im Young-gyu (Kwon Hae-hyo), a blind master of traditional seal carving, and his son Im Dong-hwan (Park Jung-min) as they dig into the 40-year-old mystery surrounding the death of their family’s matriarch. The cast also includes Shin Hyun Been, Im Seong-jae, and Han Ji-hyun.
