On the 18th, Choi posted the poster for 'Perfect Crown' on his social media, adding the caption, "It is time to come to your senses."
"Sigh. Another historical distortion controversy. At this point, are we goldfish?" Choi wrote, expressing his cynical frustration over the recurring issue of historical inaccuracies in the broadcasting industry.
"We are leading the global Hallyu wave. Dramas and movies aren't just for us to watch; people all over the world are watching," he pointed out. "We need a system that matches that stature. We either lack this system entirely, or it's still at a cottage-industry level. Despite the constant controversies over historical terminology, costumes, and dialogue, we remain stuck in the same place," he said, highlighting the limitations of the current production environment.
In particular, Choi emphasized that production companies must respect the historical academic community. "Why do you spare no expense on paying actors millions, yet try to settle historical research costs for a few hundred thousand won?" he asked, adding, "Why is the time required for historical research during production so blatantly ignored?"
As a solution, Choi proposed the establishment of a "Historical Research Institute" centered around the academic community. He explained, "If producers entrust their work to a research institute without having to worry, the institute could provide a one-stop, safe solution for scripts, costumes, and sets."
He added, "I believe it is time to stop worrying about these things, which is why I am making this proposal. Shouldn't the cast also be able to focus on their acting with peace of mind? It’s disheartening to receive such criticism after working so hard to create a good historical drama."
'Perfect Crown,' starring IU and Byeon Wooseok, became embroiled in a controversy over historical inaccuracies following the coronation scene of Grand Prince I-an (played by Byeon Wooseok) in Episode 11, which aired on May 15. In the scene, I-an wore a guryumyeollyugwan — a crown associated with vassal rulers — instead of the sibimyeollyugwan traditionally worn by emperors. In addition, the courtiers shouted “Cheonse” rather than “Manse,” further fueling criticism over historical inaccuracies in the drama.
As the controversy spread, the production team of 'Perfect Crown' released an official apology, bowing their heads and stating, "We take the viewers' criticism that we undermined the independent status of our nation very seriously. This occurred because the production team failed to carefully examine how the etiquette of the Joseon Dynasty changed throughout history."
