Prosecutors have requested a one-year-and-six-month prison sentence for WINNER’s MINO on charges of violating the Military Service Act.

At a hearing on the 21st before the Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 10 (Judge Sung Joon-gyu), MINO appeared in a black suit and admitted the charges. “I want to apologize,” he said, adding that although he has bipolar disorder and panic disorder, he understands that is not an excuse. He said he hopes to regain his health and, if given the chance to resume service, complete it faithfully.

On this day, the prosecution requested the court to sentence MINO to one year and six months in prison.

The case surfaced after a December 2024 report by Dispatch alleged that from March 2023 to December 2024, while serving as a social service worker at facilities in Mapo-gu, Seoul, MINO repeatedly violated service rules by arriving late or leaving his post without permission.

Following an investigation request from the Military Manpower Administration, Mapo Police forwarded the case to prosecutors last May. Based on mobile phone forensics and GPS records, prosecutors said they confirmed additional unauthorized absences and concluded there were 102 days in total, then filed charges.

Under the Military Service Act, a social service worker who is absent from duty for a total of eight or more days without a justifiable reason can face up to three years in prison.

The court will set the date for the first-instance sentencing later.
