At the press conference for SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama “Sold Out on You” (written by Jin Seung-hee, directed by Ahn Jong-yeon) held at SBS in Mok-dong, Seoul, on the afternoon of the 15th, Kim said, “I ended up doing a romantic comedy for the first time, unintentionally. It really wasn’t planned that way. Maybe I was waiting to meet ‘Sold Out on You.’”
“Sold Out on You” is a romance drama about perfectionist farmer Matthew Lee (played by Ahn Hyo-seop) and sellout-driven home shopping host Dam Ye-jin (played by Chae Won-bin), whose lives intertwine day and night. Kim Beom plays Seo Eric, an executive director at the global skincare brand “Letual,” forming one side of the romance.
Explaining why he had avoided rom-coms until now, Kim said, “Personally, it was a genre I wasn’t confident about. With fantasy or more genre-heavy projects, there are delicate setups in the script, so I didn’t have to embellish much―everything was already built in. But with romance-leaning genres, I think they’re very delicate, and I didn’t feel confident, so I probably steered clear.”
He continued, “When I first read the script for ‘Sold Out on You,’ so much was already woven into it. I felt I could use what I have to make Eric more dynamic,” revealing why he finally said yes to a rom-com.
On his character, Seo Eric, Kim explained, “He’s someone who was adopted as the son of the chairman of a French cosmetics brand. He’s suddenly brought into a wealthy family, but inside that home nothing feels like it’s his―no personal goals, no meaning in his day-to-day. Then he meets an important person, Dam Ye-jin, and gains purpose and a sense of what’s precious.”
To embody Eric, Kim debuted a “Mocha Gold” hair color. “I saved this shade just for this genre,” he said. “Mocha Gold symbolizes wealth. We mixed several dyes and ran a lot of tests to get it right. I wanted a hair color you don’t usually see on East Asian or Korean characters on screen.”
“I prepare obsessively for roles,” he added. “This time, I focused on clothes and colors that convey a wealthy person’s ease and gestures. I even did test shoots with a photographer friend. What’s on the surface matters too, so I prepared a lot.”
Kim also said the drama aligns with “wellness,” a buzzword meaning harmony among physical, mental, and social health. “In our busy, exhausting modern world, I hope our drama helps viewers find a bit of balance―mentally and socially,” he shared. “While filming, I felt happy and healed. The core idea behind our project is, ‘We hope the person you love sleeps well.’ I want viewers to watch with an easy mind and fall asleep feeling good afterward.”
