Singer Yoon Do-hyun, who overcame a rare cancer, hinted at changes ahead as YB marks its 30th anniversary.
Appearing on the recently released YouTube show “Sung Si-kyung’s We Will Meet,” Yoon opened up about music and life for the first time in a while.
Calling music his “drug,” Yoon said, “I just love making music. We did a 30th anniversary tour for five months, and I made about 10 songs during that time. Even on weekdays during the tour, I kept writing. For me, that’s like a drug.”
In 2021, a routine health check found that Yoon had a rare blood cancer called gastric MALT lymphoma. After three years of treatment, he shared in 2024 that he was declared cancer-free.
“After the checkup, the hospital told me, ‘There’s something concerning. You need to come in,’” he recalled. “My heart was racing. I asked if it was a tumor, and the doctor said, ‘You won’t die, so don’t worry.’ But hearing that the diagnosis was the rare cancer gastric MALT lymphoma made it even scarier.”
Treatment wasn’t easy. “At first I tried medication, but my condition didn’t change, so I went through radiation therapy,” he said. “I had to go to the hospital every day for 30 days. It was tougher than the meds, and I could barely eat.” He added, “Now I get follow-up testing once a year.”
“What I learned then is that you never know what life will throw at you,” Yoon said, urging fans not to miss YB’s 30th anniversary concert.
“We’re planning a shift at the 30-year mark, and after the shows I’m going to take a break and start new projects,” he continued. “We likely won’t do the classic YB-style concerts for a while after this. I don’t know when we’ll do them again, so you have to see this one.”
‘YB MASTERED 3.1 : THE FINAL’ will take place April 18-19 at Blue Square.
