A suspect in the fatal group assault of the late director Kim Chang-min has issued a public apology through the media.
Mr. Lee, a suspect in the injury-causing death case and in his 30s, said in an interview with Newsis on the 7th, "I know I committed a mortal sin against Director Kim Chang-min and his bereaved family. I didn't know their contact information, so I conveyed my apologies and intent to reach a settlement multiple times through the investigative authorities, but received no reply. That should also be recorded in my interrogation transcripts."
This differs from what some media outlets recently reported. The family has repeatedly said in interviews that since reports that the late Director Kim had died and would donate his organs, they have not received a single contact from the assailants.
Regarding this, Mr. Lee said, "I wanted to meet them in person and apologize, but I had no way to do so, so I'm sorry that I had to apologize through the media first. If given the chance, I would like to visit them in person and beg forgiveness."
As for how the incident unfolded, he said, "A significant portion has been reported incorrectly, but out of respect for the family's pain, it's not appropriate to discuss it now. The specifics will come out during the prosecution's investigation and in court," adding, "I had no intention to harm Director Kim, and I tried to avoid the fight. I hope people will understand at least that much."
The late Director Kim Chang-min fell into a coma after being beaten by a group following a dispute at a restaurant in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, last October. He was later declared brain-dead and, through organ donation, saved four lives before passing away. Prosecutors have received the case and are conducting a supplementary investigation.
