Park Bo-young stars in Disney+’s original series "Goldland", premiering on April 29, as a woman who awakens to her desires in front of a 150 billion won stash of gold bars. It’s a side we’ve never seen from the actress affectionately nicknamed “Ppovely” for her lovable charm.
"Goldland" is a survival thriller about Kim Hee-joo, who gets her hands on a smuggling ring’s 150 billion won in gold and fights to keep it amid a chaos of greed and betrayal. Park plays customs officer Kim Hee-joo, who stumbles upon the fortune and slowly transforms as she’s torn between desire and survival.
Dragged into a gold-smuggling case, Kim Hee-joo hides the bars and ends up on the run. With every choice she makes to stay alive, she’s pulled to the center of a dangerous game. Through it, Park is set to unveil a rougher, steel-eyed side of herself.
Even the character stills released on the 1st hint at a striking change. In them, Park stares into a mirror as if steeling herself, embodying a woman evolving between hunger for gold and the will to survive.
To portray Hee-joo’s desperate fight to live with conviction, Park also shed weight. “Kim Hee-joo is resolute and goes through a lot of change,” she said. “If I’ve often played characters who overcome with a smile, this time I wanted to show a dry, worn-down face that will do anything to survive.”
Park added, “I found myself becoming more and more like Hee-joo. I tried every intense approach I could,” signaling bold choices for the role.
Director Kim Sung-hoon explained why he cast Park: “Through Park Bo-young―who seems far from desire―I wanted to show how ordinary desire grows.” He added, “With Park, audiences can experience everyday life morphing into a genre piece,” expressing confidence in the series.
Promising an unflinching look at human instinct shaken by desire, "Goldland" will premiere Episodes 1-2 on Wednesday, April 29, then drop two new episodes weekly for a total of 10.
