DAY6’s WONPIL is lighting up his solo singer-songwriter era with his comeback track ‘Highs and Lows.’
On March 30, WONPIL released his first solo mini album ‘Unpiltered.’ It’s his first new solo project in about four years since his February 2022 full-length ‘Pilmography.’ He participated in every track, candidly capturing his inner thoughts and storytelling, which had fans watching closely.
Title track ‘Highs and Lows’ hit No. 1 on Bugs’ real-time chart on the 30th. By 7 p.m. KST on release day, all seven tracks on the album ― including the title ― had entered Melon’s Top 100.
On release day, he hosted a live session on the DAY6 official YouTube channel titled ‘WONPIL 1ST MINI ALBUM 〈Unpiltered〉 Unpiltered STUDIO.’ WONPIL shared, “I’m releasing a new album on my own for the first time in four years. I wanted to play the music I love right now, and I’m glad I finally could. After my discharge, I was so grateful for all the attention. That made me want to deliver even more musical satisfaction, so I tried a lot of new things. So many people poured their effort and sweat into this album. I’m just filled with gratitude.”
He added, “‘Unpiltered’ is an album I made to express my emotions. I hope as you listen you’ll think, ‘So he can do this too?’ and ‘He likes and expresses a lot of different styles.’ Compared to my first solo album ‘Pilmography,’ there are songs with a different musical grain and some with a similar vibe. I hope there are moments where you feel at ease while listening.”
‘Highs and Lows’ captures a desperate cry from someone barely holding on amid pain that won’t fade. Emotional guitar lines open the track before an explosive band sound surges, locking in with WONPIL’s pleading high notes for a dramatic, cathartic payoff. Since debuting with DAY6 in September 2015, WONPIL has offered warm comfort through song; with ‘Unpiltered’ and ‘Highs and Lows,’ he channels emotions many keep hidden.
Following the album release, WONPIL will hold his three-day solo concert ‘WONPIL SOLO CONCERT ‘Unpiltered’’ at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Songpa-gu, Seoul, from May 1 to 3.
