Premiering Friday, the new SBS Fri-Sat drama "Phantom Lawyer" (written by Kim Ga-yeong and Kang Cheol-gyu; directed by Shin Jung-hoon) follows “possessed lawyer” Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon-seok) and cold-blooded elite attorney Han Na-hyeon (Esom) as they take on cases to resolve the deep grudges of the dead. It’s a genre mashup that fuses courtroom drama with a fantasy world. The story kicks off when a law office opens in a former shaman’s house, giving I-rang the ability to see ghosts. Expect comedy, mystery, and cathartic legal action as he cracks each case. The show also teases the rise of an unlikely hero who listens to the wronged and helps lay their grudges to rest.
Above all, Yoo Yeon-seok’s “possessed” transformation is the show’s biggest draw. Because I-rang gets inhabited by the deceased, Yoo cycles through a parade of distinct personas―like multiple roles in one project.
It’s also Yoo’s first full-on dive into broad comedy, which has fans curious. Viewers are eager to see how his standout variety chops―strong enough to crack up even Yoo Jae-suk―and two decades of acting experience blend in this series.
The BTS photos capture his total immersion. He studies the script even between takes and rechecks scenes at the monitor, all to perfect that “possessed” edge to the character. You can feel the focus ramp up during courtroom shoots where Shin I-rang, now armed with logic, sharp rhetoric, and uncanny abilities, is set to spread his wings. Word from set is that Yoo led the vibe on site, constantly fine-tuning emotions and details to never lose the character’s through line.
“The precision and focus Yoo Yeon-seok brought made the character feel three-dimensional, episode by episode,” the production team shared. “Once the cameras roll, it’s like he’s truly possessed by all those different people―there were more than a few times the crew just stood there, spellbound. We’re confident the Shin I-rang Yoo created will be a lawyer unlike any you’ve seen. Get ready for a possession-level blend of comedy, fantasy, and exhilarating courtroom drama from the very first episode.”
"Phantom Lawyer" premieres Friday at 9:50 p.m.
