With "The King's Warden" nearing the 10 million mark, “Danjong fever” is poised to spill over into a local festival.
Ahead of April’s Danjong Culture Festival, Park Ji-hoon―who portrays Danjong in "The King's Warden"―appears in a new promotional video.
On March 4, Park shared a congratulatory video message via the Yeongwol Festival’s official social media accounts.
“I’m actor Park Ji-hoon, who played Danjong in the film 'The King's Warden',” he says. “While playing Danjong, I wanted to truly understand and convey the loneliness, pain, and inner thoughts he might have felt―not just as a king, but as a person.”
“It was a precious time for me to see and feel history up close,” he adds. “While filming in Yeongwol, the movie’s location, the clear nature and warm people made the experience so meaningful. In that special Yeongwol, the 59th Danjong Culture Festival will be held for three days from April 24 to 26.”
Yeongwol is where Danjong, the sixth king of Joseon, was exiled and spent his final days. The city launched a festival in 1967 under the name Danjongje, later renaming it the Danjong Culture Festival in 1990. Since then, it has continued to welcome visitors with a range of hands-on experiences.
Park Ji-hoon’s acclaimed performance sparked a “Danjong fever,” and his direct promo has sent interest in the festival soaring. However, Park will not be attending the event.
As inquiries surged on March 4, the Danjong Culture Festival clarified via its official social media: “Actor Park Ji-hoon will not be attending the Danjong Culture Festival. Please note this to avoid any confusion.”
Director Jang Hang-jun, however, is set to participate. He will give a special lecture at the Culture & Arts Center and attend the opening ceremony.
Released on February 4, "The King's Warden" has drawn 9.77 million admissions nationwide as of March 6. At this pace, it’s expected to hit the 10 million milestone this weekend.
