Kim Kyung-nam Turns Into an Ambitious Power Player in 'Phantom Lawyer': "But He's Different Around Esom," Teasing Juicy Tension

Kim Kyung-nam is set for another major transformation, taking on the role of Yang Do-kyung―armed with raw desire and sky-high ambition―in "Phantom Lawyer".

Premiering Friday the 13th on SBS, the new Friday-Saturday drama "Phantom Lawyer" (written by Kim Ga-young and Kang Cheol-gyu, directed by Shin Jung-hoon) follows “possessed lawyer” Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon-seok), who helps the dead settle their grudges, and “cold-blooded elite lawyer” Han Na-hyun (Esom), who stakes everything on a win. It’s a strange yet heartwarming revenge-adventure with soul.

Kim’s character, Yang Do-kyung, is the head of law firm Taebaek. He’s driven by desire and ambition, powering straight toward the top with fierce pride and a winner’s mindset. He hates losing more than anything and won’t tolerate a single misstep.

That mindset shows up in his look. “As a young managing partner, I built the base with a sharp three-piece suit, then chose bold colors to visualize Do-kyung’s unpredictable edge,” Kim explained. He also dyed his hair a brown shade to complete a different kind of “boss” image. The styling balances solidity and unpredictability, reflecting both the character’s hunger and his hidden anxieties.

But Kim’s Yang Do-kyung isn’t just a straight-up climber. “He’s full of desire and ambition, but he’s not only heavy and rigid. I wanted to show his gaps and soft spots,” he said. He focused on moments where the character’s controlled exterior could suddenly loosen, revealing the cracks beneath.

Those cracks widen when an unexpected figure enters: the unfamiliar lawyer Shin I-rang. He tackles cases in ways that defy cold logic, shaking the careful board Do-kyung set. The first whiff of an uncomfortable loss pricks Do-kyung’s pride, and the two naturally find themselves on opposite sides.

Here’s the twist: there’s one person who makes Yang Do-kyung drop his guard―his partner Han Na-hyun. “With Han Na-hyun, he gets soft. He swallows his pride a lot,” Kim shared. “It’s not exactly a love triangle, but he definitely has romantic feelings for Na-hyun and feels jealousy toward Shin I-rang.” With hyper-empathetic Shin I-rang on one side and ultra-rational Han Na-hyun on the other, Do-kyung stands somewhere in the middle. That push and pull―between reason and emotion, ambition and pride―promises another layer of tension for the drama.

Kim chose this project for that very reason. “Each episode’s story hooked me, and I felt it’s a show anyone can enjoy,” he said. Along with the fresh genre spin, the ever-evolving character dynamics sparked his drive to take on the challenge.

Desire, ambition, jealousy, and emotional fault lines―fans are curious to see all the faces Kim Kyung-nam will bring to Yang Do-kyung. “It feels like a fresh new genre we haven’t seen before,” he added. “You’ll get a variety of episodes and characters packed with charm. Please show lots of love and support.”

"Phantom Lawyer" premieres Friday the 13th at 9:50 p.m. on SBS.
