Premiering in March, SBS Special’s ""Mongle Mongle Mongle"" follows young adults with developmental disabilities as they experience first love. It’s the latest challenge from PD Go Hye-rin, whose previous work "Special-Hakjeon" won a Baeksang Arts Awards honor. The beloved couple of 14 years, Lee Hyo-ri and Lee Sang-soon, step in as “counselors” to support participants―affectionately called “Mongle-ssi”―promising a warm, uplifting synergy.
Ahead of the launch, the pair shared their thoughts about joining the meaningful project in a written interview.
On why she agreed to appear, Lee Hyo-ri said, “First, I loved PD Go Hye-rin’s previous projects and felt she makes shows with real sincerity, so I wanted to work together.” She added, “There’s a lot I don’t know about developmental disabilities and about young adults with developmental disabilities, so I wanted to learn.”
Lee Sang-soon echoed her, saying, “The intention behind it was good.” He continued, “It tackles a topic that could be sensitive―neither too heavy nor too light. I thought we could look into how young adults with developmental disabilities think about dating, in a way that’s as engaging as watching a romance show, and that’s why I decided to join.”
Through "Mongle Mongle Mongle", the couple joins three Mongle-ssi―Oh Ji-hyun, Yoo Ji-hoon, and Jung Ji-won―on an eight-week journey as each goes on a blind date and a follow-up date with different partners, searching for love. Along the way, they built a bond that felt like family at times and close friends at others. “Ji-hyun, Ji-hoon, and Ji-won all left such a strong impression on me, and I grew really fond of them,” Lee Sang-soon shared.
Looking back on the eight weeks, both picked their most unforgettable dates. Lee Hyo-ri said, “Ji-hyun’s date stands out the most. Instead of focusing on names, jobs, or ages, she felt the person in front of her just as they were―and loved what she loved. That made my own heart feel very warm.” Lee Sang-soon added, “For me, Ji-hyun’s snowy day at Hangang Park is the most memorable. Her clear, pure expression was so beautiful―it healed me. I still can’t forget that moment.” Their stories spark curiosity about who the Mongle-ssi are and the sweetness of their dates.
In closing, the couple hoped many people will tune in. “I hope viewers will watch these young adults just as they are,” said Lee Hyo-ri. “Their honest, pure energy will be healing.”
Lee Sang-soon said, “Through 'Mongle Mongle Mongle', I learned so much by observing every little thought and action of these young adults with developmental disabilities. If you watch thinking of them as people just like our family and friends, you’ll not only be entertained―you’ll feel that ‘we’re not so different after all.’”
Promising to gently upend stereotypes while delivering butterflies and healing, "Mongle Mongle Mongle" premieres in March.
