A year after Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu died at 48 on Feb. 2, a statue of the star ― created by her husband, DJ Koo (56) ― was unveiled, with Hsu’s sister Dee Hsu (47) publicly thanking her brother-in-law for his devotion.
According to Taiwanese outlets, family, friends, and DJ Koo’s close circle gathered on Feb. 2 at Jinbaoshan, where Hsu is laid to rest, for a ceremony revealing the sculpture Koo designed and completed.
Delivering the family’s eulogy, Dee Hsu expressed her gratitude to Koo for imagining and creating the memorial.
“When the grief feels bottomless, I remember that the person by my sister’s side for her final three years was her husband, DJ Koo,” she said. “He loved her sincerely, without asking for anything in return ― pure, simple, with no calculation. Thinking of how he protected her with that kind of love brings me peace, and I’m so thankful to him.”
Dee added, “Today our mom looked at the sculpture and said, ‘My baby, you’ve come back to me.’ I believe the hole in her heart finally felt full again.”
DJ Koo, along with Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, attended the unveiling. Friends said they cleared their schedules to be in Taiwan and support Koo, who has been visiting the gravesite daily since Hsu’s passing.
On the day of the ceremony, DJ Koo also shared a letter to Hsu on social media. “Hee-won, how is it there? Are you cold? Are you warm? I worry about you all the time,” he wrote. “Some mornings I sit on the edge of the bed in our empty room, numb, wondering if this is real or a dream ― wishing it were a dream ― and my chest tightens with pain.”
He continued, “I haul myself up, pack the foods you’d like, and drive to Jinbaoshan ― and the longing for you just pours out as tears. I’m sorry for showing this weak side of me. But this is the only way I know to soothe my missing you. Please understand. Hee-won, when we meet again, let’s stay together forever. I miss you. I miss you so much. I miss you to death.”
Hsu died suddenly at the end of January last year while traveling in Japan with DJ Koo and family, after contracting influenza with pneumonia that led to sepsis. After cremation in Japan, her remains were brought back to Taiwan on Feb. 5 and interred at Jinbaoshan.
