The romance drama film 'Once We Were Us,' starring Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, has climbed past 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' to claim the No. 1 spot at the Korean box office.

According to the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS database on the 8th, 'Once We Were Us' drew 54,940 admissions on the 7th, edging out 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' with 46,691 and securing its first No. 1 finish since release. The film has now amassed 647,895 total admissions.

Opening on December 31, 'Once We Were Us' hovered at No. 2 before tightening the race in week two. Despite having roughly half the screens and showtimes of 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' its strong seat occupancy powered a late surge to the top.

Word of mouth is doing the heavy lifting. A remake of a Chinese hit reimagined for Korean audiences, the film leans on affecting turns from Koo and Moon that have romance fans reaching for tissues.

'Once We Were Us' follows Eun-ho and Jung-won, former lovers who reunite by chance a decade later and sift through the fragments of their shared past in a grounded, emotionally resonant love story.
