A public memorial space honoring the late “national actor” Ahn Sung-ki is opening in Seoul’s historic film district, Chungmuro.
The funeral committee announced an official mourning period from Jan. 5 to 8, during which a public tribute site will operate at the Seoul Film Center. The memorial will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., welcoming anyone who wishes to pay their respects.
Ahn made his film debut at the age of five under director Kim Ki-young in 1957. He later rose to prominence in the 1980s, earning major acting awards and establishing himself as a leading figure of Korean cinema. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he has appeared in over 170 films, playing a central role in shaping the history of Korean film.
The Chungmuro tribute was organized to remember Ahn’s life in film with the public, in the neighborhood that served as the beating heart of his long career.
“We hope this becomes a place for fans to collectively remember Ahn Sung-ki’s life and body of work, which grew alongside Korean cinema,” the committee said.
