President Lee Jae-myung paid tribute to beloved screen and stage legend Lee Soon-jae, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 91.

On Nov. 25, the president wrote on social media, “A towering star of Korea’s arts and culture, Mr. Lee Soon-jae. I pray for his repose. He devoted his life to acting and elevated the dignity of our culture.”

“To him, acting was a bridge to share our lives with the world,” he continued. “His philosophy of the craft, his professionalism, and the grace of a true elder became a model for countless younger actors.” Lee added, “The works and messages he left behind will remain a cherished cultural legacy. His expressions and voice still feel vivid. May he rest in peace.”

Tributes from younger stars quickly followed. Girls' Generation’s Taeyeon posted a black-and-white photo in remembrance; in the shot, Taeyeon and Yuri smile brightly alongside a healthy Lee Soon-jae from happier days.

Actor Kim Hye-soo also wrote, “I owed him so much and received so much help throughout my life. Thank you.”

Lee had faced health concerns since last year and, after the cancellation of the stage production “Waiting for Godot,” focused on rest and treatment. A memorial altar will be set up at Seoul National University Hospital, with funeral details to be announced.
