'The Ugly' Sells Out 1,721-Seat TIFF World Premiere, Opens in Korea Today

Director Yeon Sang-ho’s new film "The Ugly" made a splash at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, wrapping a buzzy red carpet and a packed world premiere.

"The Ugly" follows Im Young-gyu, a blind master seal engraver, and his son Im Dong-hwan as they dig into the 40-year-old mystery surrounding the death of their wife and mother.

Officially invited to TIFF’s Special Presentations section, "The Ugly" bowed to global audiences for the first time at its world premiere and drew an enthusiastic response.

On Tuesday evening, Sept. 9 (local time), stars Park Jung-min, Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-been, Im Sung-jae, Han Ji-hyun, and director Yeon worked the red carpet, soaking up attention from fans and press who’d flocked from around the world. Returning to TIFF for the third time after "The Fake" and "Hellbound," Yeon and his cast embraced the festival’s electric energy, greeting fans and keeping the crowd buzzing.

The world premiere at the Princess of Wales Theatre was a full house, packing all 1,721 seats and underscoring sky-high anticipation for Yeon and his ensemble. The screening wrapped to sustained cheers and applause, insiders say.

Fresh off its TIFF debut, "The Ugly" opens in theaters across Korea today (Sept. 11).
