Kwak Sun-hee, who competed on Channel A’s "Steel Troops", has gone public with her love story ― and she’s tying the knot in New York this November with her girlfriend.
Kwak, who previously shared their relationship on social media, appeared with her partner on the YouTube program “Live: I Like Women” on the 26th and recalled their meet-cute. “I was smitten watching her make coffee at a bakery,” she said. “As I was leaving I told her, ‘DM me,’ and that’s how it started. I knew right away I could marry her.”
The couple currently live together. “When I filed my address change, I tried to register her as my spouse, but it was rejected because same-sex couples aren’t recognized,” Kwak explained. “We were ultimately listed as cohabitants. I’ve since learned many same-sex couples attempt this as a form of activism ― in a way, I joined that movement too.”
Kwak also shared their wedding plans: “We’re planning to exchange vows in New York in November, timed with my participation in the New York City Marathon,” she said, adding that they’ll shoot wedding photos in Jeju after returning to Korea. The pair are preparing the photo shoot with a queer photographer who reached out to them.
“As a TV personality, if I can have a positive impact, I want to be active about it,” Kwak added. “I’m open to a variety of programs, and after we get married, we hope to make a meaningful cultural impact together.”
