A family member of a victim from a sinkhole incident in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, expressed displeasure after receiving a casting request from the production team of KBS Joy's entertainment show 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller'.

Last March, a man in his 30s died in a sinkhole accident. Last month, the victim's family member, identified only as A, shared a direct message (DM) they received from the 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller' production team on their social media.

The message revealed that the 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller' team cautiously inquired if A would be interested in discussing their concerns and story related to the recent sinkhole accident on their show.

A responded, "Is this some kind of joke? Are you mocking us? Do you think this incident is something to be entertained by?" They continued, "Isn't this tarnishing the reputation of your panelists? Is this even remotely sensible?" They also expressed their frustration, "I'm genuinely curious if broadcast and media companies are filled with people who have such abnormal thought processes. Please don't tarnish the efforts of journalists and writers who are sincerely working on this case. I've been patient, but this is too much."

Realizing the inappropriateness of their proposal, the 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller' team sent another message to A, apologizing for their initial outreach. They stated, "We apologize for not considering how our casting invitation could be perceived as offensive. We bow our heads in apology."

However, the show clarified, "Beyond being an entertainment program that brings laughter to our viewers, 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller' is a 'counseling show' that deals with a wide range of concerns from various individuals. We have previously reached out to individuals affected by current issues, hoping to offer support. Our intention for the casting was not merely for entertainment purposes, and we respectfully explain this."

Following the backlash, the 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller' team acknowledged, "It's true that we contacted the sinkhole victim's family for casting. Upon reflection, we realized our judgment was not as careful as it should have been and have apologized to the family." They added, "We will strengthen our internal processes related to casting. Once again, we extend our sincerest apologies and condolences to the victim's family."
