Back in October 2020, Choi was sentenced to one year in prison by the Supreme Court for assaulting and threatening Koo Ha Ra.

Prosecutors indicted Choi for threatening to spread private videos of Koo Ha Ra to the public, threatening Koo's former agency representatives, damaging Koo's property, and also for illegal filming, for which he was later found not guilty.

The court ruled that Choi's such actions caused a significant amount of psychological pain to Koo Ha Ra, leading her to take her own life.

The court stated, "It seems that Koo Ha Ra had lost hope and motivation for the future despite achieving success as she started working as a celebrity at a young age."

The court also ruled that Choi was aware of the fact that Koo Ha Ra was going to take her own life, but continued with his actions of threatening her.

Roh Jong-eon, the legal representative of Koo Ha Ra's bereaved family, shared, "The highest level of restitution was ruled, based on the amount of mental damage recognized by the court. In the long run, we hope that the court will increase the degree of restitution in similar situation in the future."
