A woman in her 30s who reported domestic violence to the police five times and was even provided with a smartwatch has ultimately been stabbed to death.
Police have identified and arrested her husband in his 30s, a public official who was undergoing divorce proceedings with the victim, as the primary suspect.
At around 7:20 a.m. today (Sept. 1), a report was filed stating that a person had collapsed on the exterior stairs of a multi-family housing unit in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province.
The victim was identified as a woman in her 30s, surnamed A, who reportedly suffered multiple stab wounds.
Ms. A was transported to a hospital but ultimately passed away.
At the time, Ms. A's 5-year-old daughter was reportedly with her.
The daughter also sustained abrasions on her fingers and received first aid.
Tracking Ms. A's husband as the prime suspect, police arrested him on murder charges at around 11:40 a.m. at an accommodation in Jangan-gu, Suwon.
CCTV footage from around the crime scene reportedly captured the suspect wearing a hat as he attacked the victim with a weapon and fled the scene on a motorcycle.
It was confirmed that Ms. A had reported domestic violence by her husband or requested counseling a total of five times from March of last year until recently.
She was also wearing a smartwatch provided by the police, though reports indicate that she had stated she did not want her husband to be punished each time she made a report.
Amidst this process, police launched an internal investigation in May of this year, booking the husband on domestic violence charges and forwarding the case to the prosecution.
Afterward, the two began living apart and entered into divorce proceedings starting last month.
During the legal proceedings, Ms. A had obtained court-issued temporary protection orders, including separation from her residence and a ban on approaching within 100 meters.
It is suspected that Ms. A's husband committed the crime after seeing her address in the complaint documents during the service of the divorce suit paperwork.
Police plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident targeting the husband.
