As the summer draws to a close, intense heat continues to grip the nation.
Today (August 25), southern regions experienced scorching heatwaves with temperatures hovering around 35°C (95°F). As Typhoon Soudelor moves westward, it is strengthening the high-pressure system over the Korean Peninsula, further fueling the sweltering weather.
While the typhoon heads toward China and will have no direct impact on South Korea, rough seas and high waves are expected around distant southern waters for the time being.
Meanwhile, tomorrow will remain clear in the southern regions under the influence of the high-pressure system, while the mid-northern areas will turn cloudy with rain as they lie along the edge of the high-pressure system.
Between tomorrow morning and evening, heavy rain of 5 to 60 mm is expected in some areas of northeastern Gyeonggi Province and northern Gangwon Province. Other parts of the Seoul metropolitan area and inland Gangwon Province will see 5 to 30 mm of rain.
As the rain falls, heatwave advisories and warnings for the mid-northern regions have been lifted or eased. However, heatwave warnings remain in effect for many parts of the southern regions.
Tropical nights are expected to continue tonight, particularly in coastal areas and urban centers.
Tomorrow's daytime temperatures will reach 31°C (88°F) in Seoul, while southern areas like Daegu and Ulsan will climb as high as 36°C (97°F).
The heat in the southern regions is also expected to ease slightly starting the day after tomorrow as rain begins to fall.
Rain will start along the southern coast and Jeju Island on Thursday, expand to regions south of Chungcheong Province on Friday, and cover the entire country over the weekend.
After the rain stops next week, the air in the mornings and evenings is forecasted to turn noticeably cooler.
