It has belatedly been learned that Army medical personnel who witnessed a major traffic accident prevented additional damage and saved citizens through swift response.

According to the Army's 32nd Infantry Division today (July 30), a multi-vehicle collision involving four cars occurred at an intersection in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, at around 1:40 p.m. on July 23.

The crash caused one vehicle to overturn and the others to tangle, leaving five people injured, including a pregnant woman.

Army medical personnel who happened to be returning to their brigade in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, after receiving training at the division's medical unit witnessed the accident and stepped in to rescue the victims.

Master Sergeant Park Min-woo, an administrative supply non-commissioned officer for the Medical Company of the 32nd Infantry Division's Doksuri Brigade, and Civil Servant Park Seo-hyun, an emergency rescue officer, were both medical personnel holding emergency rescuer certifications.

They first turned on an ambulance siren to induce surrounding vehicles to slow down and prevent secondary accidents, while rapidly reporting the situation to the police and fire authorities.

They then provided first aid until 119 rescue workers arrived, which included placing a cervical collar on a man with a depressed level of consciousness and checking the conditions of an injured woman and the pregnant woman.

Notably, they reportedly stayed by the side of the pregnant woman—who was startled by the accident in the scorching heat—helping her stabilize until she safely met her guardian.

The medical personnel shared their thoughts, saying, "We are proud to have been of help at an urgent accident scene," adding, "Treating patients right before our eyes is simply what we ought to do as emergency rescuers."
