Earlier, daytime temperatures in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, soared to 40.3°C, marking the first time July temperatures have surpassed 40°C since weather observations began.

With heatwave warnings issued across most parts of the country today as well, Seoul will reach 34°C (93°F) and Gangneung 37°C (99°F), with perceived temperatures exceeding 33°C (91°F) in most regions nationwide.

In the Gyeongsang region, where a serious heatwave warning was issued yesterday, extreme heat is expected again today with perceived temperatures surpassing 38°C (100°F), including 39°C (102°F) in Yangsan and Busan, and 37°C (99°F) in Daegu.

Patients suffering from heat-related illnesses are also surging amid the intense heat.

While the number of heat illness patients hovered around 20 per day until July 21, the figure has jumped to over 70 per day over the past four days.

The Korea Meteorological Administration urged citizens to pay special attention to preventing heat-related illnesses, such as refraining from outdoor activities during midday, as the intensely hot weather is expected to continue through next week.
