The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced today (July 19) that it will conduct special inspections on seafood origin labeling at approximately 10,000 restaurants and retail facilities near popular summer vacation spots, including beaches, water parks, and highway rest areas.

The inspection period will run from July 20 to July 31.

The National Fishery Products Quality Management Service, the Korea Coast Guard, and local governments will participate in the inspections.

Key items subject to inspection include freshwater eel and loach, which are in high demand as summer health foods.

Other items frequently associated with origin labeling violations, such as red seabream, octopus, webfoot octopus, and sea bass, are also included in the inspection list.

The Ministry explained that under relevant laws, false labeling of origin can result in imprisonment for up to 7 years or a fine of up to 100 million won.

Failure to label the origin of seafood can result in a fine of up to 10 million won.

Park Seung-jun, Director General for Fishing Village and Aquaculture Policy at the Ministry, emphasized, "We will establish a distribution environment where the public can trust and purchase our seafood."
