The police officers who responded inadequately to the 2021 Incheon noise-between-floors stabbing incident have appealed the first-instance court ruling that ordered them to pay damages.
The two officers, who were dismissed for their poor response at the time, recently filed an appeal after losing part of the damages lawsuit brought against the government and themselves by the family of the victim, a woman in her 40s identified as A.
It is reported that they also requested that the plaintiffs bear all litigation costs.
The government did not file an appeal.
Previously, the Incheon District Court ordered the officers and the state to pay approximately 350 million won to the victim's family on June 19.
The court recognized only a portion of the liability out of the approximately 2 billion won claimed by the victims and ruled that both the plaintiffs and defendants should each bear their own litigation costs.
During the stabbing incident that occurred at a multi-unit housing complex in Namdong-gu, Incheon, on November 15, 2021, the two responding officers left the scene while leaving the victims behind.
They failed to properly stop the 50-year-old resident of the fourth floor from wielding a weapon against A, who lived on the third floor, and left the scene. The victim suffered a neck stab wound and underwent brain surgery.
The officers were found guilty of dereliction of duty and were each sentenced to one year in prison suspended for three years, and their dismissals were finalized.
Both officers filed lawsuits challenging their dismissals but ultimately lost in the Supreme Court.
