The military and the Coast Guard have successfully rescued a civilian who was drifting after falling into the sea while engaging in leisure activities in Ulsan, thanks to a joint operation conducted according to established protocols.
According to the Army's 53rd Infantry Division on July 9, Private Kim Min-su of the 19th Coastal Surveillance Battalion, Ulsan Brigade, was operating a Thermal Observation Device (TOD) at 2:20 p.m. on July 7 when he spotted a man in his 50s struggling in the water after falling off his paddleboard near Jinha Beach in Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan.
Private Kim immediately reported the situation to Sergeant Kwon, who then requested a rescue dispatch from the Ulsan Coast Guard.
The military personnel calculated the coordinates and relayed them to the Coast Guard while providing detailed information on terrain and weather conditions to ensure the Coast Guard's coastal rescue boat could safely reach the area.
Guided by the military, the Coast Guard arrived at the scene and safely rescued the man.
It is reported that the man did not sustain any significant injuries.
"This rescue was successful because the military and the Coast Guard acted as one, following the coastal security operation manual," Sergeant Kwon said. "We will continue to track and monitor any suspicious signs in the future."
The 53rd Infantry Division plans to award commendations from the division commander to Sergeant Kwon and others involved.
