A series of explosions were heard in major coastal cities in southern Iran, the semi-official Mehr News Agency reported on July 9 (local time).

According to the agency, a succession of explosions was reported across southern and southeastern Iran.

Six explosions were heard in Bushehr, home to Iran's only commercial nuclear power plant, and the nearby area of Choghadak. Three explosions were also reported in the southeastern coastal city of Konarak.

The agency further reported that explosions occurred in the port city of Bandar Abbas, a strategic hub in the Strait of Hormuz.

The cause of the explosions and the extent of any damage have not been immediately confirmed.

Iran had previously attacked a merchant vessel attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz outside of designated routes, prompting the United States to launch airstrikes on various locations in Iran in response.

On this day, the third day of the armed conflict, U.S. projectiles landed near the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran. In retaliation, Iran expanded the scope of its counterattacks by targeting U.S. military bases in the Gulf region—including those in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar—and firing 10 ballistic missiles at a U.S. military base in Jordan.
