A victim of Japanese military sexual slavery in China, identified by the name Hui, passed away at her home in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, southern China, early on the morning of July 8 (local time) at the age of 99.
According to the Chinese Comfort Women Research Center at Shanghai Normal University, Hui was born in Changsha, Hunan Province, in 1928. In the summer of 1945, she and her mother were conscripted under the orders of the Weichihui (a local organization formed by collaborators serving the invading Japanese military during World War II).
The center explained that among the women mobilized for forced labor by the Japanese military at the time, young individuals including Hui were taken and subjected to sexual slavery. Hui was released after suffering abuse for over ten days.
Hui was officially confirmed as a survivor of the atrocities in August 2024 through oral interviews conducted by the Hunan investigation team of the Chinese Comfort Women Research Center and cross-referencing with historical documents.
With her passing, the number of confirmed survivors of Japanese military sexual slavery residing on the Chinese mainland stands at six.
