A fire broke out at a waste disposal plant in Jijuk-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, at around 9:34 a.m. today (October 25).

Fire authorities issued a Level 1 response at around 10:53 a.m., 1 hour and 19 minutes after receiving the report, and brought the main blaze under control at around 6:38 p.m., 9 hours and 4 minutes later.

The fire started in one of the five buildings on the site and spread to adjacent structures. Firefighters faced difficulties in extinguishing the flames as they repeatedly reignited from the piled-up waste.

Maintaining the Level 1 response, fire authorities have mobilized 51 pieces of equipment and 212 personnel to clean up the remaining embers.

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City issued an emergency text message advising, "A fire has occurred at a waste disposal workplace. Nearby residents should move away from the incident area, and vehicles should take detours."

No casualties have been reported so far due to the fire.

Fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire and the scale of the damage once the fire is fully extinguished.
