Oil Spill Emergency at Busan Port: Where Is Boukang the Shark?

An oil spill has occurred in the waters near the waterfront park at Busan Port North Port, where a shark named "Boukang" has been staying.

Around 12:00 PM today (the 23rd), a report of an oil spill was received in the waters near the marina bridge exit of the artificial waterway at the North Port waterfront park, prompting the Coast Guard to dispatch personnel to the scene.

An oil slick measuring 10 meters wide and 30 meters long was discovered at the site, and the Coast Guard immediately initiated cleanup operations.

Boukang, which had been spotted inside the waterway exit until this morning, has reportedly not shown itself for about 4 to 5 hours around the daytime period.

Some speculate whether Boukang, which has sensitive sensory organs, may be diving due to the oil spill and unable to surface.

Boukang, which has been staying in the North Port for over a month, was guided out of the waterway through a third open-sea guidance operation on the 21st, but broke through a barrier late at night to re-enter the waterway.

Authorities have temporarily suspended the open-sea guidance operation and decided to wait until Boukang heads out to the open sea on its own.
