Kim Min-seok Meets New Social Democratic Leader Song Chi-yong, Reaches Consensus on Lowering Threshold for Parliamentary Negotiation Groups

Democratic Party of Korea Leader Kim Min-seok met with Song Chi-yong, the new leader of the Social Democratic Party, at the National Assembly on Tuesday to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the two parties.

Meeting with Song, Kim said, "The Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Party are comrades who have shaped our past and present, having taken part in the revolution of light together," adding, "We are also comrades who share the fundamental direction and ideals for the society we must build."

During the meeting, Kim and Song formed a consensus on lowering the seat threshold required to form a parliamentary negotiation group.

Kim stated, "Among the key political challenges that our two parties must resolve together is easing the negotiation group threshold for progressive parties," adding, "We will work seriously to deliver tangible results on this issue together with various progressive parties, including the Social Democratic Party."

In response, Song said, "While the Social Democratic Party had advocated for a threshold of up to five seats, I hope we can take the first step toward normalizing negotiation groups swiftly within a realistically feasible range."

Song also urged, "The core of inequality and unfairness is the wealth gap, and to narrow it, we must first rescue non-homeowners who have been held hostage by wealthy owners of multiple homes." He added, "It was regrettable that the Democratic Party appeared to focus solely on comprehensive real estate holding tax cuts, and I ask that you concentrate your party's resources on housing stability."
