North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the East Sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced.

The JCS said today (October 3), "Our military detected one ballistic missile fired by North Korea from the Wonsan area in Gangwon Province toward the East Sea at around 6:30 a.m.," adding, "The North Korean missile flew 700 km."

The JCS explained, "South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities have been tracking and sharing related developments since the early stages of the launch, and both nations are conducting a detailed analysis regarding the exact specifications," adding, "Under a solid South Korea-U.S. combined defense posture, our military is closely watching North Korea's various movements and maintaining the capability and posture to respond overwhelmingly to any provocation."

It further noted, "Our military has enhanced surveillance and vigilance in preparation for additional launches, and South Korea, the United States, and Japan are closely sharing information regarding the North Korean ballistic missile while maintaining a full readiness posture."

The National Security Office of Cheong Wa Dae convened an emergency security situation review meeting to check the readiness posture.

This marks North Korea's 16th ballistic missile launch this year, coming 13 days after its previous launch on September 20.

It is also an armed provocation coming 12 days after a landmine explosion incident involving the North Korean military occurred in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on the western front.
