South Korea is set to lead the establishment of international standards in the field of smart manufacturing.
The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced today (July 12) that South Korea has been appointed as the secretariat country for the newly established Smart Manufacturing Standardization Committee (SC65F) under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Technical Committee 65 (TC65) for industrial-process measurement, control, and automation.
The committee was formed to address the rapid spread of advanced digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins, and the accelerating trend of AI transformation (AX) in the manufacturing sector.
It will develop international standards for key future manufacturing areas, including digital twin factories that replicate production processes in virtual spaces, smart manufacturing that connects the entire process from design to production with data, and autonomous manufacturing where AI is used to autonomously judge and control production processes.
As the secretariat country, South Korea will oversee and coordinate committee operations and international standard development without term limits, allowing it to stably lead international standardization activities.
KATS plans to operate the secretariat for the Smart Manufacturing Standardization Committee to develop core technologies for domestic manufacturing AI transformation (M.AX) into international standards and strengthen global market competitiveness.
Kim Dae-ja, Administrator of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, stated, "Taking on the role of the secretariat is significant as it establishes a foundation for South Korea to go beyond being a manufacturing powerhouse and lead international standards for the future manufacturing industry." She added, "We will actively support our companies so that their M.AX technologies and innovative achievements can be translated into international standards."
