A woman in her 60s who killed her husband amid persistent domestic violence has been sentenced to prison.
Incheon District Court Criminal Division 12 (Presiding Judge Shin Sang-ryeol) sentenced A (69), who was indicted and detained on charges of murder, to 5 years in prison during a sentencing hearing today (the 29th).
The court explained, "The defendant had accumulated grievances due to domestic violence and verbal abuse from her husband since their marriage, but she endured it all her life to raise their children. Her statement after the crime—'Even if we stay alive together like this, it only brings pain to our children, and I thought now was the best opportunity to die'—speaks for her exhausting and difficult life."
However, the court stated the reasons for sentencing, saying, "Although there are extenuating circumstances to consider, such as the motive for the crime and the children's appeals for leniency, we have no choice but to impose a punishment corresponding to the extreme method of murder."
A is accused of strangling her husband B, in his 70s, to death with a necktie at their home in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, at around 10:00 PM on April 27.
Investigations revealed that A committed the crime after being assaulted by her husband and subsequently subjected to verbal abuse on the same day.
After killing her husband, A wrote a suicide note and attempted to take her own life, but failed, and ultimately contacted her children to turn herself in to the police.
A reportedly stated during police questioning, "I committed the crime because I was assaulted and verbally abused by my husband."
