A woman in her 60s who killed her husband amid persistent domestic violence has been sentenced to prison.

The 12th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court (Presiding Judge Shin Sang-ryeol) sentenced A, a 69-year-old woman indicted while in custody on murder charges, to 5 years in prison during her sentencing hearing today (October 29).

The court explained, "The defendant had harbored resentment due to her husband's domestic violence and verbal abuse following their marriage, but she lived through it all (for her entire life) for the sake of raising their children," adding, "Her statement after the crime—'Even if we stay alive together like this, it only brings pain to the children, and I thought this was the best opportunity (to die)'—speaks for her exhausting and difficult life."

However, the court stated the reasons for sentencing as follows: "While there are mitigating circumstances to consider, such as the motive for the crime and the children's petitions for leniency, a punishment corresponding to the extreme method of murder is inevitable."

A is accused of strangling her 70-year-old husband, B, to death with a necktie at their home in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, at around 10:00 PM on April 27.

Investigations showed that A committed the crime after being assaulted by her husband and subjected to verbal abuse on the same day.

After killing her husband, A wrote a suicide note and attempted to take her own life but failed, and eventually contacted her children and turned herself in to the police.

A is known to have stated during police questioning, "I committed the crime because I was subjected to assault and verbal abuse by my husband."
