An SUV driven by an 80-something driver crashed into a taxi before plowing into a daycare center during morning drop-off hours in a narrow escape from disaster.
At around 9:00 a.m. today (October 28), an SUV driven by an 80-something individual, A, collided with the side of a moving taxi on a road in Chipyeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju and South Jeolla Province.
After the collision, A's vehicle crossed the centerline, mounted the sidewalk, and came to a stop after crashing into the entrance of a nearby daycare center.
It was found that the daycare center does not have a separate yard or playground, and the front of the building opens directly onto the sidewalk.
At the time, about five to six people, including teachers and children, had just arrived at the daycare center, but no casualties occurred as they were in classrooms away from the impact site.
It was confirmed that A was neither under the influence of alcohol nor driving without a license, and caused the accident while exiting the underground parking lot of a building across from the daycare center and merging onto the road.
A is claiming sudden unintended acceleration, and the police have booked A on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents (causing bodily injury) to investigate the exact cause of the accident.
