It has been confirmed through SBS reporting that the Internet Protocol (IP) address used in recent hacking incidents targeting financial institutions, including banks, also attempted to access Toss Bank's servers.
According to data submitted by Toss Bank to Representative Kim Hyeong-yeon of the Rebuilding Korea Party, who sits on the National Assembly's National Policy Committee, on October 5, some of the IP addresses that recently hacked Shinhan Bank were found to have attempted access to Toss Bank's servers since early this year.
Previously, after hacking damages occurred at seven financial institutions—including Shinhan, KB Kookmin, Hana, and BNK Busan banks, Yegaram and Welcome savings banks, and Hyundai Capital—financial regulators shared the IPs used in the attacks with the financial sector and ordered inspections. Now, hacking attempts by hackers have also been confirmed against an internet-only bank.
According to the data, among the IPs that attacked Shinhan Bank, two U.S.-based IPs attempted to access Toss Bank's servers three times in January of this year and 11 times between July and August.
However, as Toss Bank blocked the access attempts, no security breaches such as the leakage of customers' personal information occurred.
With recent hacking attacks appearing to have been attempted much earlier than previously known, critics point out that a comprehensive inspection of the entire financial sector is necessary.
Financial authorities have instructed banks and card companies to complete emergency inspections by October 6, and securities firms, insurance companies, and savings banks by October 8.
