Amid controversy over allegations of historical distortion surrounding the film "The Assassin(s)," Representative Yoo Young-ha of the People Power Party held a press conference at the National Assembly today (October 2) and disclosed a handwritten letter by former President Park Chung-hee.
Representative Yoo explained that the letter was written by former President Park to his daughter, former President Park Geun-hye, on August 17, 1974, two days after the fatal shooting of First Lady Yuk Young-soo.
[Yoo Young-ha / People Power Party Lawmaker: "This is a handwritten letter sent by the late President Park Chung-hee, expressing his feelings at the time to former President Park Geun-hye, who was returning to South Korea from France after hearing the tragic news."]
The letter includes passages such as, "Mother took the assassin's bullet meant for your father and departed," "I keep thinking how good it would have been if I had been shot and mother had lived," and "My heart turns bleak when I think of greeting you alone at the front door."
Representative Yoo also revealed how he obtained the document, explaining that he received the letter directly from former President Park Geun-hye as the controversy surrounding historical distortion in the film "The Assassin(s)" flared up.
[Yoo Young-ha / People Power Party Lawmaker: "This letter will serve as a club to rectify the left wing's distortion of history, which seeks to spread biased conspiracy theories across the world like an epidemic."]
Representative Yoo demanded a public apology and an immediate halt to screenings from director Hur Jinho and the production crew of "The Assassin(s)." When asked by reporters whether he was considering legal action if screenings are not stopped, he replied, "Every available measure could be mobilized."
Earlier, Director Hur addressed the controversy over historical distortion, clarifying that he never portrayed former President Park Chung-hee as the mastermind behind the assassination of First Lady Yuk Young-soo, and the production team also issued a statement asking the public to "view it purely as a creative product without political intention."
